Humble Beginnings
Karla’s story begins in Compton, California in a home with her parents and siblings. Karla’s parents both did not come from a place of education, but felt the need to push education and self-discipline on their children in order for them to succeed. Karla remembers walking to the library very often with her siblings, and getting the chance to read all kinds of books. Very early on, Karla was working to support her family, and was expected to be up early all week and contribute to the family in anyway she could.
High school and Up!
Karla was able to graduate Compton High school and eventually made her way to Cal State Dominguez Hills. At school was she was able to do something her siblings hadn’t- and that was pass Accounting. In fact, at one point, Karla wanted to quit, but her professor pushed her to continue. Little would she know that this would be the field she would find herself in later. Eventually she graduated with a Bachelors in Business, with a concentration in Accounting. Many times in life, we see closed doors as a failure, but don’t realize how these small opened doors can change our lives. The same can be said for Karla’s post university journey. Instead of being hired to work at a traditional CPA firm, she went to work a tax law firm and there is where she found her passion. Later on, Karla went back to get her Master’s in Taxation from Golden Gate University.
Childhood Lessons
Many people go off to succeed and forget where they came from, and what led them to their success. However, Karla knows and thanks her parents for instilling a work ethic in her that has led her to succeed. Karla grew up in a home with two working parents, not much money, and lots of work required of them. The children had to plant their own vegetables, and had their clothes made by their mother. They had to work, get good grades, contribute to the home and do everything while being grateful and respectful. Karla is thankful that her father gave them discipline, hard work and integrity- something that she continuously pushes for in her company.
